1. Introduction

Eid prayer is a special act of worship on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It is a time for Muslims to gather in unity, express gratitude to Allah, and celebrate the completion of Ramadan or the Hajj rituals. The Quran commands Muslims to glorify Allah on these days:

“So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.” (Surah Al-Waqi‘ah 56:74)

The Prophet Muhammad made this prayer a consistent practice. Reporters stated that he consistently went out to the prayer place on Eid days and offered the prayer first.

2. When to pray?

Eid prayer takes place in the early morning after sunrise, specifically after the Fajr prayer has concluded, and the sun has risen approximately 15-20 minutes above the horizon. The time remains valid until the sun reaches its zenith (the time of Zuhr prayer.

It is Sunnah to pray early on Eid al-Adha to allow time for the sacrifice, and to delay the prayer slightly on Eid al-Fitr to give people time to pay their Zakat al-Fitr.

3. Before the Prayer

Before heading to the prayer ground, the Prophet encouraged specific acts of cleanliness and celebration.

  • Perform Ghusl (Ritual Bath): Bathing before leaving for Eid prayer is recommended.
  • Dress Your Best: Wear your finest clothes as a sign of respect and gratitude.
  • Eat Before Leaving (For Eid al-Fitr): The Prophet used to eat an odd number of dates before going out for Eid al-Fitr prayer, signaling the end of the fast
  • Recite the Takbeer: On the way to the prayer, it is Sunnah to recite the Takbeer aloud: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd .

4. How to Perform Eid Prayer (Step-by-Step)

Eid prayer consists of two rak‘ahs (units) but includes extra takbirs (glorifications of Allah). The companion Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) confirmed this, stating that the prayer of al-Fitr and al-Adha is two rak‘ahs, complete and not shortened.

In the First Rak‘ah:

  1. Make the Intention (Niyyah): Intend in your heart to pray two rak‘ahs of Eid prayer for Allah
  2. First Takbir (Takbiratul Ihram): Raise your hands and say “Allahu Akbar” to begin the prayer. Recite the opening supplication (Thana) quietly .
  3. Additional Takbirs: The Imam will then recite three additional takbirs. For each one, raise your hands to your ears and let them fall to your sides. (Note: Some schools of thought perform more; always follow the Imam) .
  4. Recitation: The Imam recites Surah alal-Fatihafollowed by another Surah (often Surah al-A‘la or Surah Qaf) .
  5. Complete the Rak‘ah: Perform Ruku (bowing) and Sujood (prostration) as in a normal prayer .

I the Second Rak‘ah:

  1. Stand Up: Rise for the second rak‘ah.
  2. Recitation: The Imam recites Surah al-Faal-Fatihaanother Surah (often Surah al-Ghashiyah) .
  3. Additional Takbirs: After the recitation, the Imam will recite three additional takbirs. After the third takbir, the hands are placed at the sides, and then a fourth takbir is said to go into Ruku .
  4. Complete the Prayer: Perform Ruku and Sujood, then sit for Tashahhud and conclude the prayer with Salam .

5. After the Prayer:

After the prayer, it is the Sunnah of the Prophet to deliver a Khutbah (sermon) . Ibn Abas رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet , Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman all held the Eid prayer before the Khutbah . It is essential to listen to this sermon attentively. The Imam will usually sit briefly between two parts of the sermon .

After the prayer, it is also Sunnah to take a different route home than the one you came from, as the Prophet did, so that both paths bear witness on the Day of Judgment .

6. FAQ

Q1: Is Eid prayer obligatory (Fard)?
A: Scholars have different views. Imam Abu Hanifah considered it a duty (Wajib) for men. Imam Malik and Imam al-Shafi‘i considered it an emphasized Sunnah (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) . Regardlessit carries immense reward and should not be missed without a valid excuse, as the Prophet even commanded women to attend.

Q2: Can I pray Eid Salah at home?
A: Even though praying with the community is highly recommended, scholars permit praying the Eid prayer at home individually or with family when a valid excuse, such as illness or extreme weather, exists. Consult your local Imam for the correct method for your school of thought.

Q3: Are there any Sunnah prayers before or after Eid Salah?
A: No. There are no specific Nafl (voluntary) prayers prescribed before or after the Eid prayer. Ibn Abbasرضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ performed the Eid prayer with two rak‘ahs and offered no voluntary prayers before or after it.

Q4: What if Eid falls on a Friday (Jumu‘ah)?
A: This is a matter where there is flexibility. According to authentic reports, the Prophet granted a concession: Whoever prays the Eid prayer is permitted to miss the Friday prayer, but they must still pray the Zuhr (noon) prayer. It is a valid and established dispensation to ease hardship.

Q5: Do I raise my hands for the extra Takbirs?
A: Most scholars, along with many companions like Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, support raising the hands with each additional Takbir during the Eid prayer. Scholars deem this practice more proper and recommend it.
